Automatic litter boxes go by many names. Some call them smart litter boxes. Others say self-cleaning litter boxes, auto-cleaning litter boxes, robot litter boxes, or simply litter robots. Whatever you call yours, it makes the same demand of its litter: perform consistently, every cycle, without supervision.
Most litters were never designed for that. They were designed for a tray and a scoop, where a soft clump or a little dust is a minor inconvenience. Inside a rotating drum or under a mechanical rake, those same flaws become daily failures. Crumbled clumps slip through the sieve. Dust settles on sensors. Fine particles ride out on paws and gather around the base.
Terra was designed the other way around. We started with the machine.
Hundreds of tests, one specification
Developing Terra meant treating litter the way an engineer treats a material. Across hundreds of controlled experiments, we measured the three properties that decide whether a litter works inside an automatic box: clumping, dust, and tracking.
Clumping was assessed the way the industry assesses it. We formed clumps with a measured volume of liquid, left them to set, then subjected them to drop tests from a fixed height to see whether they held together or broke apart. A clump that survives a drop survives a sifting cycle. Terra's clumps stay whole through the turn of a drum, which means waste leaves the litter bed completely rather than crumbling back into it.
Dust was quantified, not eyeballed. Weighed batches of litter were passed through standard mesh sieves on a vibrating screen, and the fines that fell through were collected and weighed. We also measured attrition — how much new dust a litter generates when it is mechanically agitated, cycle after cycle. This matters more in an automatic box than anywhere else, because the machine handles your litter dozens of times before you ever do. Terra's 50% mineral content carries BASF dust-binding technology precisely for this reason.

Tracking came down to particle physics. We tested grain sizes and granule weights until we found the balance point: heavy enough to fall from paws at the exit, fine enough to clump tightly, and uniform enough that the sieve separates waste from clean litter without loss. Weight matters twice over — many smart boxes rely on weight sensors to detect your cat and measure litter levels, and a litter with consistent density keeps those readings honest.
The result is a naturally sourced litter — 50% cassava, 50% mineral — with a grain specification we can state plainly: it was not guessed. It was measured.
