ScoopFree Litter: Crystal, Clumping and SmartSpin
The PetSafe ScoopFree litter type depends on the model. Crystal Smart uses its specified crystal litter and tray system. ScoopFree Clumping uses a rake with suitable clumping litter. SmartSpin rotates and sifts the bed, with PetSafe recommending premium clumping litter for best performance.
Check the full name and model code on your unit before ordering litter. The ScoopFree name alone does not identify the refill you need.
Identify the system before choosing litter
The Clumping and SmartSpin references below are Australian product listings. Crystal Smart is identified through PetSafe’s global support page. Match the regional manual supplied with your machine; names such as Crystal Pro and Crystal Plus identify other models.
| Model and reference | Cleaning system | Litter guidance |
|---|---|---|
|
Crystal Smart Global support: PAL00-16807 and PAL00-16808 |
Rake with a crystal litter tray | Specified ScoopFree Premium Crystal litter |

ScoopFree Clumping Australian listing: PAL00-17762 |
Rake for clumping litter | Small granule clumping litter; large tofu or soya pellets are not recommended |

SmartSpin Australian listing: ZAL10-17986 |
Rotating sphere and sifter | Premium clumping litter recommended; check the guide’s particle restrictions |
Crystal Smart: keep the specified crystal system
PetSafe’s Crystal Smart litter guidance says to use ScoopFree Premium Crystal litter. It rules out clay litter, natural litter and other crystal litter. The same restriction applies when using the PetSafe reusable litter tray.
Use the tray and measured litter according to the Crystal Smart setup instructions. Do not replace that refill system with a clumping formula.
Terra is not a substitute for the litter specified for Crystal Smart. A product intended for a clumping automatic box does not meet a crystal tray requirement simply because both machines use the ScoopFree name.
ScoopFree Clumping: check granules as well as clumping
The Australian PAL00-17762 page recommends small granule clumping litter and discourages large pellet tofu or soya litter. The rake needs to work through the litter actually in the tray. A clumping label alone does not settle particle fit.
PetSafe’s Clumping litter care guidance warns that the unit may not scoop correctly below the minimum fill line. Its Clumping cleaning instructions direct refilling to the maximum line. Follow the marks and manual for your unit, rather than borrowing a fill amount from a crystal tray or rotating sphere.
SmartSpin: use the sifter and fill procedure
PetSafe’s Australian SmartSpin page lists clumping litter in its compatibility field. It also uses broader wording in its features, with premium clumping litter recommended for best performance.
The published SmartSpin user guide adds an important limit: larger pellets, including tofu litter, may not be compatible. That detail should stay alongside the broad product wording when you choose a refill.
Fill and calibration belong to SmartSpin
The guide says to enter Add Litter mode before adding fresh litter, stay within the MAX fill line, then exit that mode so the unit calibrates to the current litter weight. Match the controls and instructions supplied with your regional model. This is a SmartSpin procedure, not a rule for the Clumping rake or Crystal Smart tray.
Where Terra fits in the decision
Terra is a finished cassava and sodium bentonite clumping formula. Its material category alone does not establish tested compatibility with ScoopFree Clumping or SmartSpin, or approval from PetSafe.
If you are considering Terra for either clumping system, give PetSafe the exact model, purchase region and current formula information before changing litter. Keep the manufacturer’s material, particle, fill and setup requirements together.
For choosing litter across suitable clumping machines, read our automatic litter box selection guide. For the material comparison, use clay versus crystal cat litter. The first decision remains the model on your label.
